How do you rate yourself?

Good post Andy,

I too think that we have off days and 'on it' days. What I am happy with is that (playing wise) I have gotten to the stage where even my bad nights sound reasonable.

(Oh boy does that sound baaaaad!!!)

What I am trying to say, (without sounding like I think I'm the sh*t - I'm not) is that, technically speaking, I might not think I played well, but members of the audience may come up and compliment me (or the band) on the gig.

I think this is important to understand. It doesn't make it easier for me to deal with (I'm aware I might have had a stinker that particular night) I'd still beat myself up about it, the point is to get to a stage where your 'bad' nights aren't obvious to the rest of the band, or audience for that matter...

I do not judge myself based on whether guys are smiling and I am not saying we need to "grade ourselves" per se, though I felt that that was the proper idiomatic, universal way to discuss personal criterion for working situations. And whether we "grade ourselves" or not, we certainly all feel we did bad or good about a gig. All I wanted to find out was what it was for this elite class of drummers that made a good gig, good for them. I could suggest that we all pragmatically look at it through the lens of whether or not we get hired again or asked again, but I know that when it comes to our drumming, that is not a sufficient mechanism. We want to be better for ourselves, not because we want to be like Virgil, Vinnie or Rikki Rockett.

With that I hope that all is settled. Dazz, you are good man and I understand what you were responding to. I am on that page with you.

Hey Grease- I'm in a musician recovery group with a bunch of other former North Texas drummers-things are going well, though I still need to be restrained with a straitjacket when we start discussing Carlock...
